While I'm still corralling photos from multiple cameras and phones and real film rolls, I thought I'd share a mini story with you before I get around to a big Belize highlights reel. On our trip, M and I decided to venture inland for a day and explore some of the beautiful Maya ruins in the region. On the river leg of the journey, we met a monkey.

This monkey. She has no name.

But she was intrigued by our boat tour and decided to hop aboard.

She shared a conversation with our guide, Eddie, made herself right at home at looked at us all like intruders on her boat.

Then came her big move—grab the tortilla chips and make a break for it.

Close encounter. But not too close (thanks zoom), we don't want any Outbreak situations happening.

Her friend on shore got very ~~jealous~~ concerned about all the ~~tortillas~~ commotion.

So she left us just as quickly as she joined.

Last year, M and I started up a Valentine's Day tradition—making gifts for each other and cooking dinner at home. (See what I came up with right here.) This year, however, we are flying to Belize on Valentine's Day. We agreed that presents are altogether unnecessary (because, hello, we're flying to Belize!), but I'd still like to do something sweet for him.

Throughout our relationship M has been known to put together mix CDs of sweet songs and artists he thinks I'll like. So what better (free) way to share some love on the 14th (and provide a chilled out soundtrack for airplane napping) than a Valentine's love mix? I thought I'd share the tracks I came up with in case any of you are looking to make a gesture to your own sweetheart or just want to feel extra warm and fuzzy with your headphones at work. Enjoy!

Happy weekend, my lovelies! How is your February going so far? I have to apologize, for I've been a bad, bad shop owner the past couple of weeks. I promised a look book and I promised new goodies and I have yet to pull it all together. So that's on the agenda this weekend. For now, here's a peak at the new tray size that will be available next week (and pattern)—the Midi (in blush & gold leopard—never enough blush and gold right?). It's a little bit bigger than other options, with nice high sides to hold all your stuffs.

In other exciting news, this happened yesterday:

i could make that: olatz duvet diy

I want to preface this post by saying this may not be THE most helpful step-by-step DIY ever, but I hope it can still inspire you a bit! You see, I didn't have a real method when I set about making this project, I just kind of winged it—and to top it off, I didn't take the time to document every step... But away we go anyway!

Here's what we're talking about. (My bed! The finished result! Our sad apartment paint and lighting! Yuck, the apartment looks jaundiced. Anyway, sadly, you are not getting a full room, or even an upper bed shot today. If I crop the messy side tables and pile of laundry out, then they don't exist, right?):

So let's start at the beginning. We've all seen and gushed over Jenna Lyons' beautiful Olatz bedding. That pop of red just does something fantastic to a crisp white duvet. If it weren't for the $1200 price tag, I think a million bedrooms would have had this set immediately following the publication in Domino.

A couple of weeks ago Joanna shared her bedroom makeover on Cup of Jo. And I spotted it--the perfect Olatz look-alike DIY! I was excited to learn exactly how the DIY went down, but it turns out the sewing was outsourced (for around $100). Beautiful results, but I'm looking for reeeeeaaaally DIY here (read: reeeeeally cheap).

You see, not only do I not 'need' a new duvet, but M and I have also been debating a new bed purchase for a long time. Sometime soon (maybe? hopefully?), I expect to be upgrading to a king, and with that comes all new linens. So I can't even justify investing in an economical option like this, when I know it won't be around for long.

Here's where my wheels started turning. It occurred to me to sew a stripe on myself. Then it occurred to me that I've never really been able to even properly wind a bobbin, so that's out. The answer? Iron-on fusible webbing.

This solution wins for several reasons. 1. It is insanely easy. 2. It is insanely cheap. 3. It is moderately fast. 4. While it is washable, and somewhat 'permanent', I feel comforted knowing that if I ever get over this stripe, I could really just give it a little muscle and peel the whole thing off.

The materials:

M and I already had a white duvet cover that is perfectly soft and worn in, so I decided to work with it.

I bought 2 yards of a bright cheery red (cheap) fabric, which came to about $8.

In addition, I bought a pack of 2" wide fusible webbing tape stuff, which came to about $9.

And an iron. The end, that's it!

Just kidding, sort of. Brace yourself for a horrendous explanation of this process.

I started by cutting three strips from the 2 yards of fabric. Mine were about 6.5" wide, to allow for some fold-over 'hemming' on both sides. Altogether, I wanted about 6" wide stripes, but they ended up being 5.75". Adjust as you see fit!

I folded over and pressed about 1/8" 'hems' on each side of my red strips. This fabric reacted wonderfully, and really held the crease like magic! From there, I laid out the duvet cover, one side at a time. Then I set about laying out my first strip of fabric. I had measured with the duvet on the bed that I wanted about 13" between the edge and the strip. So, I pinned down the red stripe at intervals to ensure that the 13" border was consistent.

Then, moving in small chunks down one side, I removed pins and placed the fusible webbing strips underneath, and followed the package directions to secure the adhesive. Once that was done, I repeated up the other side until the whole strip was secure. Repeat on the other side!:

My stripes went all the way to the duvet edge on one end (on the headboard side of the bed), and stopped at the other end where I would apply the cross stripe and join the corners together with a little faux mitre action:

How did this happen? Basically I ironed down the two side strips flat and the cross strip on top. Then folded the overlaying strip corners and ironed at the perfect angles. Then just trimmed my fusible webbing to fit the triangle. Ta-da!

So have I completely confused you? Like I said, this was a wing-it job. But it turned out very pleasing to look at, I have to say! Of course, when you're working with fusible webbing, there may be areas that didn't get completely secured and may loosen (especially at those corners). You can just re-iron them.

This is by no means a permanent solution, and if you do a lot of hanging out on top of your duvet, or have kids or dogs or anything that might wear and tear this thing, you might be better off with real stitching. But for my purposes--basically staring lovingly from the doorway--this should hold up just fine!

Well, lovelies, we are another week into 2012. How are your goals and resolutions holding up? Funny how quickly we forget about them, right? Since many of my own goals are related to expanding tilly | maison, I have been feeling a pretty constant antsiness (new word!) to do everything I want to do all at once, right now. Next week I'll be shooting new items, so that's what this weekend is dedicated to—finishing the things that I can, and figuring out a plan for the things that will have to wait.

I can't wait to share the new stuff with you guys, but for now the shop is open with a limited selection of some classic pieces. Enjoy!

Today I read a helpful little blog post over on Etsy about getting creativity flowing. The author presented some good ideas, but one really stuck out to me: #1 Let go of preciousness. Lightbulb! This might be one of my biggest sources of paralysis in the creative process, and I am so glad to have it called out. Especially at this moment, while developing new products for the shop reopening, I find myself procrastinating or giving up on things because I'm not sure what the absolute can't-fail perfect next step might be. I'm hoping that realizing this (and stocking up on extra supplies for screw-ups...) will free up the process a bit (and help me reach the tight deadline I've set for myself!).

I think this idea can open up more creative thinking and productivity in other realms too. Have you been stuck on anything too precious lately, for fear of screwing it right up?

I know you thought the holidays were over, but I'm still going (kind of) strong. You see, each year, my girlfriends and I do a Christmas slumber party/secret santa/wine and gab fest. It never works out in December, so I'm looking forward to hosting the ladies this weekend (and gathering around a super dead tree) for some January Christmas.

I still had a few gifts left to wrap for my secret recipient, and came across this blog post the other day with a really cute idea for wrapping. Jennifer simply sewed crepe paper streamers onto craft paper and voila:

Cute, right? Well I didn't have any streamers on hand, so I did a little tweaking, and borrowed inspiration from these invitations I whipped up a few years ago.

The end result? Fringey, fluffy, tissuey wrapping that I think is quite adorable—and perfect for any occasion, NOT Christmas-specific. Hello! Valentine's Day is coming!

As a total aside from all the holiday chatter, I just realized that M and I are hopping a plane to Belize in just about 6 weeks! Things have been so hectic for the both of us, it will be nice to get a few days of nothing but relaxation (not even a TV in our thatched roof hut!) and maybe some tropical adventure. We'll be staying on a teeny island off the coast, called Ambergris Caye. So, dear friends, I pose the question—have you ever been to Belize? Any recommendations? Even if you haven't visited that caye, I'd love to hear what you enjoyed—Maya ruins tours, snorkel trips, food, anything!

Another year is coming to a close, you guys. Can you believe it? I know I say that every year, but seriously. It has me thinking about new goals for 2012 (rather than resolutions) and the goals I've already reached in 2011. I revisited a few of my posts from this time last year, just to check in on how I fared:

+ Read more books (for pleasure, not for class and research) - Check! (sort of)
+ Pursue my research in Europe - Check!
+ Try a tilly | maison booth at a craft/gift/something show - Almost check! (made impossible by a family emergency)
+ Paint (something other than a tray) - Check!
+ Practice patience - Not even close!
+ Complete my Master's degree - Check!
+ Continue enjoying this pretty amazing life - Check!

It feels pretty good to look back on everything that has transpired this year, and definitely inspires me to set equally exciting, yet attainable goals for 2012. Although, here's all I've come up with so far:

+ Launch a shop for artwork and prints
+ Introduce stationery to tilly | maison
+ Visit one new country (ok, I'm cheating, this plan is already underway)
+ Spend more time with friends, and take advantage of awesome Minneapolis (seems so obvious, but somehow seems to go frequently overlooked)

This list is minimal right now, but that's okay. Having literally just finished my Master's thesis (as in, last week), I'm still adjusting to this new life full of free time and how I want to allocate it. Will I focus my energy on the shop? On running more miles? On finishing my apartment decor? I have absolutely no idea. It would be really easy to slap something like a half marathon on that list, but do I really care about completing a half marathon? Not really. I think it's important to balance goals with plenty of wiggle room to figure out what you really want to do and how you really want to spend your precious time.

What do you have in mind for 2012? Are you the resolution type? How did you fare in 2011? I'd love to hear :)

Well, my dears, the light at the end of the tunnel is here (almost). The past few weeks have been pure madness. The holiday rush of orders, busy projects at work, a Master's thesis to present and revising the paper that goes along with it, all while battling a cold and preparing for the holidays.

Woof.

But somehow I made it out (so far). This weekend M and I are heading out of town to his family's Christmas get together, and I couldn't be more excited to just chill with wine and games and food and good people. With the last few loose ends to tie up by Monday I am finally looking beyond the storm to the calm after. Looking forward to a clean dining room table and a clean studio. There are so many things I've had stored up in my brain for you at tilly | maison, but no time to fulfill them. So the next month or so, while you're all being so patient and the shop is on hiatus, I'll be over here busily working on the next goodies for you to enjoy. There might be artwork and there might be stationery and there might be other things, but for now I hope you'll all join me in relaxing and soaking up the holidays with family and friends.

Every year I brainstorm lofty ideas for gift wrapping. Many times, my ideas wander back to white paper and beautiful ribbons, or hand stamped/painted/doodled designs. However, finding quality, inexpensive white wrapping paper is nearly impossible.

Enter, the Container Store's banner paper:

It's thick, NOT transparent, has a bit of a sheen, comes on a hefty roll and is super cheap. This year my dreams of crisp packaging and candy striped ribbons will finally come true.

The week after a few days off is always the hardest, don't you think? But we survived! It's been a big one over here—far and away record sales in the shop and on top of that, yesterday I successfully defended my Master's thesis! The light at the end of the tunnel is getting closer, (and at the same time the orders are stacking up faster than I can keep track)! So this weekend, I am looking forward to relaxing and celebrating with friends, wrapping presents and tackling a LOT of trays.

Did you all have a lovely Thanksgiving? Things have gotten so insane around here, I can hardly remember that relaxing feeling. My thesis oral defense is coming up this week, which is terrifying in its own right, but add this view to my days...

The holiday shopping season is officially ON, and I am feeling it! Santa's workshop has relocated to my apartment. (Would you retch in horror if I told you that paint-splattered thing is our dining room table? Ha! Oops! The sandpaper elves will be showing up later, I hope.)

Is it just me, or has Christmas slipped in and become totally acceptable to think about already? I counted around four Christmas movies on TV last night. I'm hearing holiday muzak in the shops. I can't say that I hate it, but it is making me panicky because my own holiday collection is not quite ready! I am one of the most impatient people on earth and it is killing me that I don't have anything to share while the world sets about celebrating the holidays early.

After many requests, I'm happy to announce that half-dipped mugs are back in the shop! This batch of upcycled mugs were actually rescued spare catering supplies. I've brought them back to life with a new hand-glazed finished.

What do you guys look for in a mug? I'm big into spacious handles—all the better for getting cozy and warming up my perpetually freezing hands. These fit the bill perfectly. Cheerful colors are also a bonus this time of year as the mornings start to get dark (equally effective for dark evening hot toddy action...).

Hey darlings! It's only Wednesday, but my mind is already firmly on the weekend ahead. Not only will I be turning in my thesis this Friday (AAH), but M and I will be hopping a plane to Austin, TX shortly after. We're heading down for a friend's music festival, Fun Fun Fun Fest and I. can't. wait.

Anyway, while we're pretty much booked with shows all weekend, we are setting aside some time to meet up with some family and friends, so I'm looking to you guys for some help! This is my first time to Austin (and TX!), so if you have any recommendations on a great breakfast joint or place to grab a beer, I would love to hear! I know the options are endless, but with only 48 hours or so to spend, we have to make the time count.

As I write this post, my thesis draft is quietly glaring at me over the browser window. Whenever I'm faced with a deadline like this (I'm looking at you, November 4), I go into procrastination overdrive--cleaning, baking, crafting, shopping, whatever-ing until I absolutely have no choice but to sit down and write. Well this weekend was no different, but the results are something might interest you.

Has everyone Emily's stunning office on Apartment Therapy? You know the one.

Center stage to her design is a fun, sparkly garland from Confetti System.

So cute, right? Also, so $130. EEk. I scavenged around a bit for an alternative, and discovered this shop on Etsy, Pomflair, with garlands for $30.

STILL, I thought, $30? For 6 feet of tissue paper? Nonsense, I'll make my own. And you guys, I'm telling you, this is the easiest thing in the world. Perfect for procrastination.

First, your supplies: String, tissue paper in your choice of colors, a yard stick and a blade (if you have a rotary cutter, GREAT, if not, grab an exacto or scissors).

Lay down the whole pack of tissue paper and cut strips, maybe a 1/2" wide.

Drape on your string. Twist.

Voila! You don't even need to secure the tissue with anything. That's it. (I'm serious.) Continue alternating colors and trim the length if you'd like a little variation. This is as far as I got before my paper really started calling my name. Thankfully, M doesn't seem to mind the party happening in our dining room in the meantime.

All for about 10 bucks.

I went with cream, khaki, white, lavender, pink and silver tissue colors. I was none too thrilled with the gold mylar tissue available at Target the other day, but when I find some silver, that will be coming in to the mix. The tassels slide easily to adjust spacing or fill in colors once you get a rhythm going (looking at the photos now, I think I want to untwist them a bit more). Excited for this little string of joy to hang in my office, photos to come!

What do you think? Would you try something like this yourself (for everyday OR your next party), or say screw it to the labor and pony up for the professional version?

EDIT: After realizing how insanely close together I set the tassels, I adjusted to find that this amount covered the entire length of string--about 10 feet. Bingo! All for about an hour's worth of work.

Yesterday was an interesting day. After I pulled myself off the floor after this tweet from HouseBeautiful, I received another email about an article I was asked to contribute to a while back. It's ready for print! The only problem I'm having is tracking down the magazine, HomeStyle. I've gathered that this is something smaller publishers use to supplement magazines or newspapers, rather than something I can go buy directly. SO, needless to say, if you happen to spot this cover, grab one and let me know!

And, for the record, I was a bad friend who forgot to give proper photo credit before it went to print. As much as I love a shot of bold color, our taupe striped trays have really grown on me this year. So subtle and versatile and downright pretty. Here's a look at our taupe petite tray paired with one of our large trays. Do you find the visual size comparison helpful? I have a feeling it is, so I'll be putting together more group shots for a better idea of the differences in our trays.

This week, I'm excited to share that gold is returning to the shop. There was so much love for both of our limited edition petite trays earlier this year (both full of gold goodness) I think it's time for something a little bigger. Stay tuned, lovelies. And for now, have a happy Monday!

One of the big challenges I always face while organizing travel plans is the big hotel decision. I get so swept up in reading reviews, weighing costs and location--it's overwhelming. That's why when I find a good egg I want to shout it from the rooftops.

While in Paris last week, I stayed in Montparnasse at the Hotel Apollon. Brilliant decision, and for any of you planning a trip in the future, I highly recommend it. If you've traveled Europe at all, you know most hotel rooms are microscopic. My single room here was definitely petite, but it had a double bed, plenty of space on either side, separate toilet and shower rooms, mini refrigerator, writing desk and big beautiful windows. In addition, the linens were crisp and clean, wi-fi was free and the hotel staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating.

All this, just a block away from a metro stop, several cute bistros, yet on a quieter Paris street. I wouldn't say typical "walking distance", but I will say I walked to the Eiffel Tower and Invalides area from the hotel more than once. After all, the best way to see a city is to get out and wander around.

All in all, a lovely stay and when you're navigating the endless options, it's nice to have some recommendations on the short list, right?

Good (early) morning, my sweets! It's about 4:30 in the morning and I've been awake for an hour or so. Love jet lag. London and Paris were equally dreamy, as expected, and I will be sharing some pictures next week, but for now, how about a few updates?

Thanks for all your patience while we were closed the past couple of weeks, and now I have to ask you to wait just a little longer! For several reasons, I've decided to move tilly | maison off etsy. While it's one of my favorite sites of all time, I think it's time to create my own space outside of the noise of the marketplace. So, in a few days, the shop will reopen in a new location. I'll let you know as soon as it does!

On top of that, I'm working on a new shop that I hope you'll check out (soon. hopefully.). As I mentioned a million years ago, I've been getting back to my roots in drawing and painting this summer. As I'm sure you can imagine, wandering the streets and museums of Paris this week I was slammed by inspiration constantly. It really upped the urgency of this project for me, so I hope you'll stay tuned for the launch in the coming weeks.

I have a to-do list longer than I'd care to acknowledge--bags to pack, papers to write, artwork to finish, apartment to clean-- but besides that it's going to be a fantastic weekend, filled with state fair greasy food, poolside partying, out-of-town friend hosting and mimosa brunching.

I've been collecting recommendations from everyone I can and let me tell you guys, my 4 days in Paris are going to be busy. Here's a peek at what I hope/plan to do, in case you're planning you're own trip and looking for inspiration...

First up, I've learned that most of Paris' museums are free of charge on the first Sunday of every month! Well, guess when this girl arrives? That's right, the first Sunday of the month. So I'll spend the afternoon hopping around checking out a few of the best and deciding which I want to come back to for a little more in-depth wandering:

I'll wander the Champs Elyssées and wind up at the Arc de Triomphe.

My hotel is near the Luxembourg Gardens, so you know I'll be lounging around here.

Today I am 26 years old. What? Really? So long, early twenties! Hello, late-mid-twenties! Reflecting a little bit this morning I'm realizing how wild the past year has been. In the past 365 days I've managed to:

Start my own business
Start a new job, which I am actually enjoying
Spend two nutty weeks exploring England
Present research at my first and second academic conferences
Move into an apartment with my very favorite person in the world

I want to send a thanks to each of you for making that first accomplishment such a delight on a daily basis. tilly | maison is so important to me in so many ways (and is about to turn one year old itself!! what??) And as Linus says, now is the time to pursue the heart's desires with enthusiasm. I have big plans for 26, both personally and here in the world of tilly | maison. I can't wait to share what's coming next, it's going to be good!

After a brief moving hiatus, tilly | maison has reopened! Due to the obvious craziness of life right now, the new fall items and the next limited edition styles have not been listed yet. Right now all the classic trays and a few leftover vintage goodies are available.

You'll also want to note that we're trying out a new order format. Some listings are now titled 'Choose Your Color.' For those items you'll be able to request any of the colors listed, (which are all colors that have been previously featured in the shop). I'm excited to allow a little more freedom and customization this way, rather than trying to list a million options for each piece.

It's been a crazy summer, friends, and it's only going to continue that way--trips to Europe, conference papers, the nightmare that is moving, grant research, starting a Master's thesis, a full-time job, tilly | maison, enjoying summer and on top of that -- this little blog. I'm slowly figuring out that the trick to handling all this, and life in general, really comes down to simplifying. Cut out what's unnecessary and make what's left the best it can be.

In moving--throw away the crap, keep the things you love.

In thesis-drafting--focus on the body of work you've built and plan a way to grow it rather than reinventing the wheel and losing your mind before age 26.

In travel--pack lightly. You really don't need all those shoe options.

In shop management--it's okay to take a break to take care of other life business and again, avoid that mind-losing situation we talked about.

In this blog--define the goal and focus on that.

The goal here has always been to keep you guys informed on shop happenings and share inspiration. But a blog is a slippery slope into irrelevancy and posting-just-to-post posting, not to mention a lot of (unnecessary) pressure. So from here on out, it's back to basics. I'll be talking tilly | maison news and sharing inspiration on a regular basis, but rather than trying to be all things to all people, I'm hoping this will give me time to focus on what I do best and craft better quality posts that I (and hopefully you) will really enjoy.

help! the rug decision.

Ok, you guys. I know this is not going to be anyone's dream living room design scenario, BUT I'm living in compromise land now (or at least will be starting Sunday), and could use a little help. Remember way back when, when I started brainstorming what an interior compromise for us might look like? Well, it will get there, but for now, I'm starting simple. Area rug, folks! It's time to talk area rug.

Luckily (for M), my interior style is not overly girly. I like bold colors, but I also like classic patterns and silhouettes when it comes to furniture. Accessories are where things get a little crazy for me. My current rug is being relocated to my office (wee, it feels good to say that), so bye bye pink zig zags, hello gender neutrality. However, bold patterns will prevail! Here are some mock-ups I've come up with to run by M, complete with stand-ins for his beloved brown leather couch and my beloved blue coffee table. Now, remember, these are JUST the bones! Accessories and styling to come. Please bear with me and the apparent boredom of the space ;)

Days like today I am positively GIDDY to finally have summer offices instated at the office. I'll be ducking out early and heading to the beach with some girlfriends. Much needed after the craziness of these past few weeks. After that I need to come back to the reality that M and I are moving NEXT weekend. Yikes. Weekend lounging and sun will have to mingle with packing and cleaning. What do you have planned?

travel diary: tea time.

One of my favorite things about England quickly became tea time. On the first morning of the trip, a few of us decided to venture to Kensington Gardens to the Orangery for tea, where a friendly tweeter had recommended I check out. Excellent decision. From the floor to ceiling windows to the teeny orange trees on every table, this place was all kinds of cheerful. The next time you're in London, be sure to stop by. (I had the cheese scone and English Breakfast tea. I am not a big raisin person, and I quickly learned that if you want the whole clotted cream-jam-scone experience, raisins WILL be involved.)

Here I am with a few of my soon-to-be new friends. (can you tell we were still in the awkward stranger phase? :)

Those windows I was telling you about. The Orangery is literally where the palace used to move its orange plants and other citrus during the winter, so sunlight is a must.

Today's weather in Minneapolis: 95-100 degrees, with (here's the kicker) around 70% humidity. It makes me want to eat cold fruit, sit in front of the air conditioner and do nothing else. Simple, no ovens involved and, in my world, the addition of cheese is all a dish takes to be considered a meal.

Hello my sweets! After a long day of travel, I finally returned to Minnesota yesterday. My time in England was surreal, and I can't wait to share some stories and inspiration with you all. I also want to say thanks for your reading and footwear recommendations! I ended up downloading The Help, Bossypants and Unbroken (almost ALL 5-star ratings, can you believe that?). Of course I ended up with MUCH less spare time than I had expected, so I have made my way through each, but have finished none yet--even so, I recommend them all!

Now it's time to get back to Central Standard Time, a stifling heat and humidity wave in Minneapolis, work and of course, the shop has reopened. I am excited to catch up with you all when I get a chance. Happy Monday, lovelies!

It should really be the title of this blog in general, but it's ~~Monday~~ the Monday of the week I head to London, and that means my head is everywhere.

First of all, is 'professional luggage packer' a profession? If so, I need to get into that. 2.5 weeks. 5 cities. 1 suitcase. Read it and weep, my friends. You'll also spy my expandable le Pliage bag tucked in there to allow for plenty of shopping.

Secondly, I need your help! I recently went in search of some good, cute, walking-friendly shoes for the trip. There is going to be a LOT of walking and I'm fairly certain my favorite little pieces of fabric disguised as ballet flats aren't going to cut it.

Sadly, I only came back with these which, though comfortable while standing still or even better with feet propped on a coffee table, M informs me don't count as walking shoes either. He may be right... So please, lovelies, help!! Comfortable and cute are my only requirements. I'm not yet desperate enough to go for orthopaedic clogs.

Finally, I'm asking for your book recommendations! I am buying a few books for the iPad to hold me over on long flights and train rides. So far I've decided on The Help. I have heard nothing but wonderful things about it. Have you been reading anything you'd recommend? I would love it! Thanks dolls.

Well the clock is winding down until London town--next Thursday! Yikes! I am thrilled and nervous and feeling unprepared. BUT it's Friday and that means now is the time to completely ignore the stress and focus on the fun happening between now and then, right? Procrastination is one of my favorites.

This weekend, M has planned a surprise date in honor of our anniversary. I have only instructions to bring a change of clothes and a swimsuit. The weather looks PERFECT and I just can't wait. I am also looking forward to finally meeting our friends' brand new baby girl and ending with a farewell brunch with some of my favorite ladies. Well, "ending" before the madness sets in on Sunday--packing and presentation preparation and London research and errand running and last-minute order finishing and loose-end tying. Eep. Not to think of now though, it's 2 whole days away!

Good morning, sweets! Today I'm excited to share a few bits of news.

First, a little project I am SO thrilled to participate it. Dallas Shaw--fabulous fashion illustrator extraordinaire--whom I'm sure you're familiar with, even if you don't know it, is in the process of redesigning her office, week by week, piece by piece. Each week she has a new designer select the next item and YOU, the people, get to vote on what ends up in the office.

Fun, right?

Well imagine my excitement when Dallas asked me to participate and select a few trays that would fit the newly curated vibe. Head over to Dilly Dallas to see the choices and weigh in!

Second, I have a new adventure I hope you'll join me on. At the start of this year, I set some goals for my shop that involved expanding the work somehow to include original artwork and prints. You see, I was trained in drawing and painting in college and unfortunately, ever since, I haven't had time or felt the inspiration to give much attention to my paints and pencils and pastels. But, as other artists can certainly attest, when the urge comes to make things, you just. have. to. make.

So I've finally made my way back to the drawing board (literally), and I can't wait to share the work with you. I will be opening an entirely new Etsy shop this summer, that I hope you'll pay a visit to (though tilly | maison will continue to function, of course).

But I couldn't very well share the news without a little sneak peek, could I? Here's a teeny look at what's been happening over here...

It's finally Friday! This has been a BIZZ-Y week on my end, how about yours? I wish I had exciting summer plans on deck for the weekend to share with you, but instead I'll be hanging out almost exclusively with my laptop and a pile of research preparing for my conference presentation in jolly England (leaving in less than 2 weeks! ahhhhh!). That's the problem with submitting a paper to present... you have to follow through and actually write it. I'm hoping for a bit of rain to make it easier.

Do you have any wonderful weekend plans I can live vicariously through? Much appreciated!

Alright, lovelies. I'm ready to talk new apartment again. You may remember this post from a while back in which I started brainstorming the ways that M and my belongings might get along in our new apartment. Well since then, it's been awful apartment hunting mania. Stressful and disappointing and time consuming. Now we have a potential winner in our sights and I'm allowing myself to dream of how the space will work.

The apartment actually contains a small half bedroom beyond what we were looking for that will most likely turn into my office/studio. I can't tell you how excited I am to have a place to make a mess that isn't my dining room table. The clutter of trays and paint and packing supplies is sometimes too much for me, so this will be, in a word: awesome.

I have a feeling that this office/studio will turn into a mini replica of my current apartment. The place where my white couch and zig zag rug can go to live in harmony (although as far as possible away from paint drips).

I've started scouring inspiration sources for organization ideas and overall concepts for desk spaces and studio spaces that I can mix and match. Here's a sample (you'll quickly see how very all over the place I still am):

I lived with a German family in Dusseldorf for a month one summer in high school. I also lived in Florence (Italy) for a semester in college. The differences between these experiences are extreme, but one of the most significant in retrospect was the lack of journal kept in Germany. I'll kick myself forever on that one. By contrast, one of my most prized possessions from Italy is the diary I kept. It's amazing how many details you think will stay permanently branded on your memory only to disappear within a few months. Not the big things, mind you, it's the little things. It is always so amazing to flip through and instantly remember the details and activities of those days.

With that in mind, I've been investigating the perfect travel diaries to accompany my trips this summer. Flexible, portable, and able to withstand storage in desk drawers for years to come. Here's what I'm considering:

Gold stripes, you say? Yes please. (Designers Guild)

Classic, leather cover, lasting you for every trip from now on, rubber bands to hold all your loose papers and notes (AND a binder to store your used notebooks in?) (baum-kuchen)

One of my favorite paper purveyors (and I'll try not brag too hard about having the only brick & mortar shop, right here in Minneapolis), russell + hazel, offers tons of cute notebook options perfect for travel and later organization/storage. Little loops on some let you save them all together in a binder, pretty covers on all make them fun to haul (and thus use more?) in your carry-on bag. Not to mention cute rubber bands my boyfriend loves to roll his eyes at. They are purposeful and worth the $, I swear. (russell + hazel)

You can't have a notebook discussion without mentioning Moleskine. Literally. I tried, but blogger inserted it here magically anyway. You could go with a classic pad, but what about a CITY book? Journal and tourist guide in one. Brilliant. (moleskine)

the perfect weekender.

I promise to try to go easy on posts that claim 'the perfect _____', but I really can't resist here, because it's really very true.

I've been on the hunt for a weekender bag with a few circumstances in mind:

- Weekend trips out of state are happening more and more, especially with wedding season upon us.

- I want to bring a spare bag on Europe trip #1 this summer, not only for shorter excursions out of London, but for bringing back gifts (I swear, just gifts).

- I have the lofty goal of packing only said weekender bag on Europe trip #2 later this year, as it involves country-hopping and a light traveler is a happy traveler.

With these circumstances in mind, I set out to find a bag that met these requirements:

- Decently large. A tote bag will not suffice, folks.

- Lightweight, preferably collapsible (after all, luggage real estate is precious).

- Shoulder strap (tiny straps look great slung across your elbow at first, but get back to me after about 5 minutes when your elbow is about to snap. In fact, this bag was purchased to replace just such a short-strapped little number.)

- Cute? Is that too much to ask?

Enter, Longchamp and the genius that is the expandable Le Pliage carry-on.

First, it's a good-size bag.

(With a shoulder strap.)

Then the circus tricks come out. It expands into a ~~ginormous~~ even more generously-sized bag that is still completely carry-able by said shoulder strap.

Sold! And available in all kinds of colors (though I went for classic black). I test drove her for an out of town wedding this weekend, and I'm sure M will gladly attest to the fact that I can't shut up about how much stuff it holds (even in its smaller size).

father's day mini gift guide.

Father's Day is coming up and it's time once again to face the love-hate relationship I have with giving my dad gifts. On one hand, he is the most difficult person on earth to shop for. On the other hand, I love giving gifts and I love a challenge.

There is always so much potential in published gift guides for dad, don't you think? But alas, mine is definitely not into fancy things and he is not into "hip." No plaid bow-ties or funky new money clips or guitar lessons for this guy. On top of that, he doesn't harbor any particular hobby or collection that fosters an endless fountain of gift ideas. He dabbles. He works hard. He relaxes. He is a meat and potatoes kind of guy and he has been wearing top-siders for so long (not ironically) that they have become cool again.

Given that there are only so many pairs of flannel pants or new wallets you can give someone (and Christmas and birthday pretty much wipes out those idea stocks anyway), I set out to create a realistic gift guide. Because as much as I'd love to give my dad an awesome print of his favorite beer bottle deconstructed, he really couldn't care less.

1. Jeans. My dad is a tall skinny guy, with an apparently rare jean size. That means jeans that won't turn into highwaters are always appreciated. (Gap, $65)

2. A gift certificate for baseball tickets. I love the idea of giving tickets, but until someone figures out how to predict the summer schedule of a guy with four kids still at home, there's no chance of choosing a good date. So the second-best option: online gift certificates that the recipient can redeem for a game that suits them. Genius! (Milwaukee Brewers Online)

3. - 4. Steak knives and/or great steaks. I actually owe part of this idea to M (and his mother), who brilliantly decided to get my parents a pack of filet mignon for Christmas last year. Seriously, no better way to my dad's heart. Bravo, boyfriend, bravo. In any case, you can't go wrong with steaks during prime grill season. To go along with this, I'm suggesting knives too. Dull, old knives are not happy knives, folks.

5. Sperry's top-siders. As I said, my dad has been wearing top-siders for as long as I can remember. It's time for an upgrade and I like this salt-washed pair enough to get over the idea of ordering a gift for my middle-aged father from PacSun. (Sperry's Top-Siders, PacSun $85)

Hi lovelies! Happy June! (Really?? Seriously?) That means the tilly | maison shop is back from hibernation and ready to go--almost. Thanks to the wonders of technology, most of the new items won't be listed until later today, but to hold you over until then, I have two new pieces all set, my new obsession: ombre kitchen towels. I'll be sure to let you all know when the shop is in full gear, but for now, enjoy!

Happy ~~Monday~~ Tuesday, everyone! Did you have a refreshing long weekend? Mine was the perfect mix of relaxation and busy, busy.

There was occasion for the perfect dress. (And for those who requested, an awkward, lame and embarrassing mirror photo.)

Now go buy the dang dress, already.

There was also a baptism! I mention this only because if you're looking for the next great baptism present (the one that won't end up buried in the basement for the next 20 years), I'd like to recommend this:

Mixed in with the weekend's events and research and cook-outs and restaurant patio hopping, I've also been busy getting some new items ready for the tilly | maison refresh. So, I thought I'd give you a sneak peek of some of the treats debuting this week! As I mentioned earlier, the vintage stock is being replenished and some new trays will be available. I hope you're all still digging neutrals and metallics these days, because they are creeping their way into my work BIGTIME. I've also been feeling really inspired by illustration lately, and have been playing with looser, hand-drawn lines and patterns which I hope you'll love as much as I do. Enjoy!

File this one under 'why-didn't-I-think-of-that'--mason jar meals, perfect for a summer picnic! This brilliant idea from the decorator cookie would be excellent for Memorial Day, don't you think? I love a good picnic basket (those tiny wine glasses get me every time), and these would be so easy to throw in (and clean up after). Not to mention are just plain pretty.

And speaking of picnics, a few summers ago I did a REALLY simple little DIY you might want to try. It started with these beautiful linen deck towels:

Of course my favorite style was completely sold out, and besides, I thought, it's just a big piece of fabric--I could make that. (And hello, linen at a picnic is sort of terrifying. Red wine anyone?)

So I did. One old canvas tabbed curtain panel (tabs cut off, straight hem sewn) later, et voila! Instant picnic (and beach!) blanket--bigger than any towel I've seen, more durable, lighter and less fussy than a real blanket. (Ignore the wrinkles and faded color--a year in storage and a phone photo will do that to you). You get the idea.

I can't wait to pack up the goods and head to our favorite picnic spot. Do you have one? I know people talk about how darling picnics are all the time, but I always wonder if anyone actually picnics all that often. Though with approximately 1.2 bajillion lakes around here, it's hard not to find a shore to hang out near.

A hefty title, I know, but trust me. I received this dress in the mail the other day and I. am. obsessed. Don't let the simplicity fool you. This thing is so cute and so ridiculously versatile. Straps, strapless, with blazer, with cardigan, bare shoulders, perfect length. I'll be dressing it up with nude heels and jewels for summer weddings, and dressing it down with a straw hat and flip flops for trips to the lake. It's the perfect weight (and lined) cotton. Fitted bodice, flowy skirt. Poppy. I could go on and on, but instead, I'll just share and warn you that I'm about to order every color (and no, J. Crew is not paying me, unfortunately):

I think it's safe to say that spring has settled in for good. After a giant burger at a baseball game last night, fresh corn on the cob hanging out in my fridge and an excessive set of grilling tools recently purchased by M, I have major outdoor dining on the brain. My thoughts always trail off to a recipe I tried last summer--totally over the top, but totally amazing. I can't wait to try it again, and I thought I'd share it, along with its source, and one of my favorite food resources: Amazing Sandwiches. (This site completely lives up to its name.)

Case in point: The Big Bad Wolf Burger

There's beef. There's cheese. And basil and bleu cheese and avacado and mango and spicy mayo and HASHBROWNS. It's an epic party--a rave, if you will--of flavors and textures and pure delight for your mouth. Don't say I didn't warn you. This is the kind of burger that will linger in your thoughts for months, I swear. Enjoy!

Good morning! I hope you all had a lovely weekend. I've been busily finishing some new items for the shop and preparing for a photo shoot tomorrow. I'm very excited and at the same time, am feeling like my creative process needs work. Other Etsy owners may be able to relate--and bloggers too, I'm so often in awe of the material you're all cranking out day after day. It can be quite a challenge to put 100% of yourself into an outlet like tilly | maison, when you only have 20% of your time to give.

I dream of dedicated studio space and hours for doodles and samples and experiments, but in reality, my workspace lives in the dining room and those hours of possible creative freedom are often spent elsewhere. Perhaps this is a time for some after-new-years resolutions. Dedicating time in the day to creativity is a valuable priority, and one I'm sure most of us overlook. So inquiring minds want to know, how do you fit creativity in?

Well my sweets, another weekend is upon us. And as much potential as I feel at the beginning of every semester (research to develop! new library books to check out! endless time to work!), I see even more so in the spare time that opens up after a semester. This weekend is one of those times. My final paper is submitted and with no research or traveling or serious plans to keep, and nothing but rain in the forecast, this could be the weekend I do anything and everything I've been meaning to do--completely clean and purge my apartment in preparation for moving, get started on all the new tilly | maison projects that are currently hanging out in my head, finish an old craigslist chair makeover, try my hand at making homemade donuts! I know it won't all be accomplished, but there will definitely be time for...
